Abstract

This article presents the relationship between literature and plastic arts in the texts by Marosa di Giorgio under “A propósito de Los animals grotescos de E. W. Cooke” (1999) from a comparatist perspective. This work was published in the dossier “Enlightened bestiary”, in the “Separata Cultural” section of "Posdata", a journal whose contributors publish on illustrations by Edward William Cooke, a twentieth century English drawer and lithographer. Medieval bestiary and Greek mythology lie under the symbolism
shared by artists this article focuses on. An analysis of some of the animals is provided, for example the symbolism of the swan. A reading of modernists Ruben Darío and Delimira Agustini will be done, followed by critics like Vicente Huidobro, Enrique González Martínez or Nicanor Parra in order to figure out their place in Marosian writing. A survey of many paintings displaying the “three graces”, or “Moiras” will be provided to pay attention to the literary (dis)figurement of these characters by Marosa di Giorgio based on the grotesque animals by Cooke.
